Novak Djokovic Returns to US Soil with a Win over Injured Davidovich Fokina

    Novak Djokovic, the world No. 1 tennis player, made his long-awaited comeback to the US courts on Wednesday, August 16, 2023. He faced Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the rising star from Spain, in the second round of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati.

     The match was expected to be a tough test for Djokovic, who had not played a singles match in the US since he lost the 2021 US Open final to Daniil Medvedev. The Serbian had been unable to enter the country for two years due to the Covid-19 vaccine requirements for non-US travelers, which were lifted earlier this year.

     However, the match turned out to be a short-lived affair, as Davidovich Fokina retired with a back injury after losing the first set 6-4. The Spaniard had taken a medical timeout at 3-4 and seemed to be in pain throughout the match. He gave up after two points in the second set, handing Djokovic a default victory.

      Djokovic expressed his sympathy for his opponent and wished him a speedy recovery. He also said he was happy to be back on the US soil and thanked the fans for their support. He joked that his next match against Gaël Monfils, another 36-year-old player, would be a “duel of the veterans”.

      Djokovic is aiming to win his third title at the Western & Southern Open, which is considered a warm-up event for the US Open. He won the tournament in 2020 when it was relocated to New York City due to the pandemic. He is also chasing his 21st Grand Slam title at the US Open, which would make him the most successful male player in history.
